6. Youngsters‘ Use of the Internet

The bar charts above display that an increasing number of young people tend to surf the Internet more and more frequently in Beijing. In 1995, only 500,000 youngsters had access to Internet spending about 0.5 hour, whereas in 1999 about 4 million young students spent almost seven times longer time online.

It is no wonder that the Internet is shaping youngster‘s life. It provides an abundant source of information and facilitates young people‘s communication with their familiar or unfamiliar friends. However, as students, they should not indulge themselves in the illusive world or even playing online games for a rather long time. They should cautiously guard against the unhealthy contents available online.

Personally, I also prefer to utilize the Internet properly for the following reasons. First and foremost, it is accessible for me to get the latest information of software, which is my favorite subject. Equally important, thanks to the Internet, I make many foreign friends and make great progress in English through constant communication with them.

tighter and tighter. The public awareness of the situation has created a surge of interest in seeking a master‘s degree. 8. Driving Private Cars to Work

The two pie charts above illustrate that an increasing number of people in the big city have chosen driving to work in the past two decades. Between 1981 and 2001, the proportion of people riding bicycles or resorting to public transportation declined respectively by 18% and 10%, with people driving motorcycles and private cars growing by 16% and 12%.

There are two main components accounting for the rising percentage of private-car drivers. Nowadays, it‘s common for people to travel a long distance to work in big cities or even across cities. Private cars will undoubtedly become the first choice when speed and convenience are considered. What‘s more, with rising average income and the advent of some types of economical cars, people can afford private cars, which used to be luxuries for almost all Chinese.

Some people pessimistically believe that the growing numbers of cars on the road will lead to some negative effects. On one hand, it will worsen the traffic condition in metropolitan cities. On the other hand, it will also pose great threat to the environment.

9. Cooperation or Competition a.

There has long been a heated discussion over whether cooperation is more essential than competition. As for me, the importance of cooperation and competition equals.

Firstly, each person is like a screw of the machine. And several tasks call for the cooperation of all the members of a group. Performing your own tasks carefully, keeping pace with your classmates or colleagues and listening to others‘ suggestions help you succeed in the end.

However, being competitive also has a place in life. As a member of the group, if you want to achieve more and be better than others, you must make more efforts, working harder or studying more diligently. Moreover, you should have the competitive spirit and adapt yourself to competition.

In a word, we must learn to be both cooperative and competitive in order to succeed in life. What we need to learn is when to be cooperative and when to be competitive.

10.Should College Students Live on Campus a.

There are an increasing number of students who choose to live off campus. Parents and university administrations understandably reacted differently. They voiced concerns about security and the threat of off-campus lifestyles getting out of control. However, college students have their own reasons for their choices.

Some students prefer to live on campus for the following reasons. First, campus residents are closer to classes, the library, and other resources, so they are more likely to succeed in college and complete their bachelor‘s degree in four years. Furthermore, living in a dorm is a great opportunity to meet all kinds of new people and develop relationships with them, so students living on campus are more sociable. Last but not the least, living on campus is cheaper and more convenient. Often times, off-campus housing is more expensive than on-campus housing and while living on campus, you don‘t have to worry about monthly rent payments and utility bills. Some others choose to live off campus because they believe living off campus they are more independent, with more privacy and a lot more quiet time. Living off campus gives them freedom from those dorm rules and allow them to set their own. The extra space also means that one can probably find a quiet place to study in the convenience of his own home.

As for me, I‘m a faithful supporter of the former group because I, living on campus myself, have witnessed and enjoyed all the convenience and happiness of doing so. To me, living on campus undoubtedly adds an important element to the complete college experience.

12. How I Improve My English a.

With the trend of globalization, English becomes a vital tool for effective communication. College students now concern more about the improvement of their English. Students‘ secrets are as follows.

As we know, ―Practice makes perfect.‖ Diligent study contributes to some students‘ progress in their English. Others turn to entertainment for help, watching English movies and making an all-out effort to learn English songs. Still, some sociable students make regular appointments with their foreign friends for a chat, a dinner or a party.

As for me, I prefer the third way. Two ingredients could account for my choice. It is primarily because there is no better way to learn idiomatic English than communicating with native English speakers. Moreover, it is owing to my sociable and friendly personality, that is, I like making different kinds of friends.
