Subject:Soap-free emulsion polymerization preparation of polystyrene microspheres

Speciality:Polymer materials and engineering

student:Sang Wei (Signature) Instructor:HouZhenzhong (Signature) ABSTRACT

With the development of science and technology, the application of polymer microspheres more and more widely, especially the single dispersible polymer microspheres by the attention of people, become a research hotspot. Among various kinds of polymer microspheres, polystyrene (PS) microspheres, which is widely used in the chromatographic column packing, photonic crystal optical filter, light switch, high-density electromagnetic data storage and chemical and biological chemical sensors, etc. Traditional preparation of PS microspheres: emulsion polymerization, dispersion polymerization, suspension polymerization. These methods need a lot of additives, post-processing complex and serious environmental pollution, the product surface is not clean, the cost is higher. Soap-free emulsion polymerization is entirely without emulsifier or only contains a small amount of emulsifier in emulsion polymerization, compared with the traditional polymerization methods, low cost, simple post-treatment processing, the surface is clean, environment pollution is small. This article studied the monomer concentration, initiator dosage, reaction system ion concentration and temperature on the influence of particle size of polystyrene microspheres. The results showed that other conditions remain unchanged, the particle size of polystyrene microspheres increased along with the increase of monomer concentration; Initiator concentration increases, the microspheres particle size decreased; Reaction system in the ionic strength increases, the

microspheres particle size increases, the ion concentration is too large when easy to agglomerate and formation of microspheres. In addition, the influences of temperature on the polymerization of styrene; aggregation at relatively low temperature is difficult to occur. The products for the infrared spectra (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and laser particle size (DLS) characterization, results show that when the dosage of styrene is 0.087 mol, dosage of potassium persulphate 1.30 mmol, dosage of NaCl was 2.56 mmol, the reaction temperature is 80 ¡æ, the reaction time of 12 h, the average particle size of the PS microspheres of about 0.83 ¦Ìm, dispersion and particle size distribution is relatively good¡£ Key words: polystyrene microspheres, soap-free emulsion polymerization, the preparation methods£¬ applications Topic type: A
