As she stood in front of her class, like most teachers, she said that she loved them all. However, that was impossible, because in the front row there was a little boy named Teddy Stoddard. Mrs. Thompson noticed that he did not play well with the other children, and that his clothes were dirty. In addition, Teddy performed badly in studies. Then, she was required to review each child’s past records. However, when she reviewed Teddy’s, she was in surprise.

One of Teddy’s former teachers wrote, “Teddy is an excellent student with a ready laugh and good manners, well liked by his classmates, but his mother’s death has been hard on him. His home life will soon affect him if some steps aren’t taken.” By now, Mrs. Thompson realized the problem and she was ashamed of herself. She felt worse when her students brought her beautiful Christmas presents, wrapped in beautiful ribbons and bright paper, except for Teddy’s. His present was an old bottle that was one-quarter full of perfume (香水). She applied some of the perfume to her wrist. Teddy Stoddard stayed after school that day just to say, “Mrs. Thompson, today you smelled just like my mom used to be.” After he left, she cried for an hour. Since then, Mrs. Thompson paid particular attention to Teddy. The more she encouraged him, the faster he progressed. By the end of the year, Teddy had become one of the smartest children in the class.

The story did not end there. Years later, there was a letter from Teddy, saying he was going to be married. He was wondering if Mrs. Thompson might agree to sit at the wedding in the place that was usually reserved for the mother.

Of course, Mrs. Thompson did. And guess what! She wore the perfume. They hugged each other, and Dr. Stoddard whispered in Mrs. Thompson’s ear, “Thank you so much for showing me that I could make a difference.” Mrs. Thompson, with tears in her eyes, whispered back “Teddy, you were the one who taught me that I could make a difference. I didn’t know how to teach until I met you.”

Thanksgiving Day, a holiday designed to give thanks and blessings for a good harvest, is drawing near. But are you still having trouble with what gifts you should give? So let’s take a look at some of the different gifts being sent to people from different countries, and maybe you will be able to find some inspiration. Americans

In 1941, the United States Congress had passed a law, ruling the fourth Thursday of November to be Thanksgiving Day. The make-up parade (游行) is hard to miss, therefore cosmetics (化妆品), such as cosmetic mirrors, skincare products and sunglasses, may be good choices for gifts. Egyptians

In ancient Egypt, Harvest Festival was celebrated in honor of their harvest god Min during the spring season because that was when their harvest season would fall. The festival starts with a parade, followed by banquets, a ball and sports. Because music and movies are very popular here, CDs and DVDs are always great gifts. Moreover, art is also welcomed. One thing that should be noted is that blue and yellow colors need to be avoided since they are forbidden in the country. Chinese

The Chinese have the traditional festival “Mid-Autumn Festival”, celebrated by families on the 15th of August in Chinese lunar calendar. Mooncakes and fruits are common gifts. But believe it or not, it is becoming a trend for an increasing number of young Chinese to celebrate the Western Thanksgiving. Carnations are a good present for mothers during the festival. Gloves are also a good idea, especially as the weather is cold. Jews

Sukkot, a Jewish festival celebrated for the autumn harvest, has a history of over 3,000 years. During the eight-day of Sukkot, Jews build many cabins, using branches, to memorize their ancestors’ chancel (圣所). A feast is held during the second day in these specific cabins. Hanukkah is the original name of the festival. Thus lamps and lanterns are always in proper use. In addition, silk is considered to be the ideal gift for this holiday. 【文章大意】 感恩节马上就要到了,那么在这个节日该买什么礼物送给自己要感恩的人呢?不同的国家或民族有不同的感恩节形式和庆祝方式,赠送礼物的形式也不尽相同。 5.Which countries hold some parades during the festivals? In 2015,a report from The New England Journal of Medicine showed that increased body weight is related to the death rate for all cancers. This is based on a study involving about 900,000 people, spanning many years.

The study, started in 1992 by the American Cancer Society, included men and women from all 50 states. The youngest participants were 30 years old,and the average age was 57.By December 2008,24% of the participants had died, just a quarter of them from cancers. In analyzing the results, researchers attempted to take account of such potential factors as smoking, drinking alcohol, taking aspirin and a wide variety of other factors that might otherwise affect the results.

The results are clear: the more you weigh, the greater your risk of dying of cancer will be (up to 52% higher for men and 62% for women). In men as well as women, the only cancers that did not have a strong connection with weight were lung cancer and brain cancer. For women, the strongest correlation with weight was uterine cancer (子宫癌),which is 6.5 times higher for women with a BMI (Body Mass Index) of 40 or more. For men,it was liver cancer, which is 4.5 times higher in most obese (肥胖的) men. Smokers tend to be more successful in keeping weight off than non-smokers,slightly reducing the risk. But many of them don’t have good lungs. Thus,in another way, they also face risks.

As for why extra weight leads to excess cancer death rate, there’s no clear agreement. But the decrease in vitamin D in obese people seems a likely factor.Vitamin D is known to have a role in preventing cancer. Also, there is a simple fact that obesity makes the management of cancer more difficult.Although for now there is no simple answer to why obesity increases a person’s cancer risk, all we know for certain is that the risk is real.

“A key chemical of brain development may play a role in explaining why some people are genetically (由基因决定地) likely to suffer from anxiety and could lead to new treatments,” the US researchers said.

They said highly anxious rats which were kept had very low levels of a brain chemical called fibroblast growth factor FGF2,compared with the rats that were more relaxed. But when they improved the anxious rats’ living conditions—giving them new toys to play with and a bigger cage to live in—levels of this brain chemical increased and they became less anxious.

“The levels of this brain chemical increased in response to the experiences that the rats were exposed to.It also decreased their anxiety.”Javier Perez of the University of Michigan said in a telephone interview.“It made them behave the same way as the rats that were relaxed,” he said.

In a former study of people who were severely depressed before they died, the team found the gene that makes FGF2 was producing very low levels of the growth factor, which is known primarily for organizing the brain during development and repairing it after injury.

Perez thinks the brain chemical may be a marker for genetic vulnerability (脆弱性) to anxiety and depression. But it can also respond to changes in the environment in a positive way, possibly by preserving new brain cells.

Although both the calm and anxious rats produced the same number of new brain cells, these cells were less likely to survive in the high-anxiety rats, the team found.Giving the rats better living conditions or injecting them with FGF2 helped improve cell survival.

“This discovery may help find the way for new, more specific treatments for anxiety that will not be based on sedation (药物镇静),but will instead fight the real cause of the disease,” Dr.Pier Vincenzo Piazza from France said in a statement.
