Fans of classical music and jazz are creative, pop lovers are hard-working and heavy metal listeners are gentle, creative types who are at ease with themselves. So says Professor Adrian North of Scotland's Heriot-Watt University who has been studying the links between people's personalities and their choice of music.

“People often show their sense of identity through their musical taste, wearing special clothes, and going to certain pubs. It's not surprising that personality should also be connected to musical preference,”North said.

North said it was the largest study ever of people's musical preference and character.Researchers asked 36,518 people from around the world how much they liked 104 different musical styles before taking a personality test.

“Researches have been showing for many years that fans of rock and rap are rebellious (叛逆的),”North said.“But this is the first time that research has shown how personality is connected to a liking for so many musical styles.”

The study concluded that jazz and classical music fans are creative with good self-esteem,although the former are much more outgoing while the latter are shy.Country and western fans were found to be hardworking and shy; rap fans are outgoing. Those who like soul music are creative, outgoing, gentle,at ease with themselves and have a high self-esteem.

And if you've ever wondered why people driving expensive sports cars often have loud music played in their cars,North could have an explanation.

“Those who choose to listen to exciting, loud music are more likely to earn more money than those who go for relaxing sounds,” he said.

North is still looking for volunteers to take part in the research.

Louis Armstrong had two famous nicknames (绰号). Some people called him Bagamo. They said his mouth looked like a large bag. Musicians often called him Pops, as a sign of respect for his influence on the world of music.

Born in 1901 in New Orleans, he grew up poor, but lived among great musicians. Jazz was invented in the city a few years before his birth. Armstrong often said, “Jazz and I grew up together.”

Armstrong showed a great talent for music when he was taught to play the cornet (短号) at a boy's home. In his late teens, Armstrong began to live the life of a musician. He played in paradise, clubs, and on the steamboats that traveled on the Mississippi River. At that time, New Orleans was famous for the new music of jazz and was home to many great musicians. Armstrong learned from the older musicians and soon became respected as their equal.

In 1922 he went to Chicago. There, the tale of Louis Armstrong began. From then until the end of his life, Armstrong was celebrated and loved wherever he went. Armstrong had no equal when it came to playing American popular songs.

His cornet playing had deep humanity and warmth that caused many listeners to say, “Listening to Pops just makes you feel good all over.” He was the father of the jazz style and also one of the best-known and most admired people in the world. His death, on July 6, 1971, was headline news around the world.
