15. Don't Rely on Luck! P.93

Passing(To pass) exams is every student's dream. Failing them is their nightmare. So, to realize(/fulfill) their dreams, many students try anything(/anyway) (可加possible). They even go to fortunetellers, buy lucky charms and follow old customs.

In Korea, many students bury something personal in the university they want to enter. They believe(It’s their believe) that these things will act as magnets and \them into the university. Whether it works or not, nobody really knows. At least it does ease the students' minds about passing exams. Remember, though, you can't always rely on luck. There is no substitute for hard work.

Again, we have an article here, on page 93, we'd like to have Bruce read this lesson first, of course, together with the title.

This can never be too true, in fact, without hard work, you can't get anywhere. You will never be successful.

K: What's the matter, Pak? You look depressed. Did someone just die or what? P: Well, someone is going to (die) soon. K: Oh, my God! Really? Who is it?

P: Me. I flunked the exam and my dad's going to kill me.

K: How come you flunked? I thought you did everything the fortuneteller told you to do.

P: I thought so, too. I was sure of passing (the exam). That's why I went to see him this morning.

K: Well, what did he say?

P: He said I flunked because I did everything very well except that I forgot one thing. K: What's that? P: I didn't study!

You should study. If you don't, then you'll flunk. you'll be flunked.

Of course, both are fine. I should say, both are terrible. I hope you don't flunk, and I hope you won't be flunked.

If you don't study, you will flunk(/fail).you will be flunked(/failed). well answered. Flunk, this word is quite useful in spoken English. flunk/fail ①vt. He flunked /failed the exam.

What does this story want to tell us? --The most important thing about being a student is studying, not luck.

Now, we still have a couple of minutes left. so, we'd like to have this opportunity to ask Bruce to tell us something about how to prepare for an examination on behalf of students.

Well, the most important thing is to get enough rest and relax yourself before the exam, so that you can think well and then you must prepare your mind by reviewing all the material. of course, reviewing means to go over or to study again your notes. I used to study with my

23

classmates, then we could ask questions and answer questions to help each other. So, first, help your body by relaxing, getting enough sleep, don't be nervous. second, get your mind ready by reviewing. these two steps will help you when you study.

And also while doing so, you are lucky to run into some problems you don't understand. In that case, you have to go to class to ask your teacher to help you out. This is something that is very very important. In other words, make sure that you have no doubts about anything that you are learning.
