China’s hot word, tuhao, may be in Oxford English Dictionary.

In Chinese, tu means rude and hao means rich. In recent years, people use this term to describe those who spend money in an unreasonable way. The word became more popular with Apple’s gold-colored iPhone, which is loved by China’s rich people. The color became known

as “tuhao golden”. The word is now often used to refer to people who have money but lack taste.

There are two other Chinese hot words: dama and No Zuo No Die, which may also be taken in the dictionary. Dama, meaning middle-aged women, was first used in the Western media by the Wall Street Journal. Thousands of Chinese women were buying a large amount of gold when the gold price had gone down. Another phrase No Zuo No Die, meaning if you don’t do stupid things, they won’t come back to bite you, is also very popular. Other words, such as Maotai, Chinglish and dim sum have also been included in the dictionary.

BBC World News recently made a special program called “Tuhao, let’s be friends!” “The frequent use of Chinglish by foreign media suggests that foreign people are looking more to the lifestyle and popular culture of China,” says Zhang Yiwu, professor of Beijing University.

What does this trend suggest about the Chinese language’s influence?

It was needles that brought Anaelle Regneil to China. She was attracted by the “tiny silver needles that could smooth the pain of a patient” used in acupuncture(针刺疗法).

Following her curiosity, the high student student in France who was learning Chinese about a decade ago, was eager to find out more about traditional Chinese medicine.

She majored in both Chinese and Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM) at college. Then, considering TCM to be more developed in Britain, where there were a few private hospital of

TCM, she did an internship(实习) at a TCM clinic in Leeds, Britain. That was where she heard about the scholarship of the first Confucius Institute for TCM.

In 2013, she studied Chinese at the Confucius Institute in Leeds for three months, and won a scholarship. She then started a one-year internship in the Acupuncture Department of Heilongjiang University of Chinese Medicine in Harbin.

“I thought at the beginning that with the knowledge and techniques of acupuncture, it would not be so difficult. After all, acupuncture should be the same everywhere, right?” the 27-year-old woman recalled. Before long, she found with dismay that she was wrong. Later on, she moved to the Internal Medicine Department, where she learned to give prescription(药方). Learning the properties, composition and curative effects of TCM was difficult but useful.

And now she is in her third year of graduate studies supported by the local government in Northeast of China’s Heilongjiang Province.

I hardly remember my fourth-grade teacher’s name, but I do remember two things - math tests and Love That Dog.

My fourth-grade teacher read many books to my class, but I only remember Love That Dog. Fourth grade is the time when your teacher reads books to you and you pretend not to like it - but there’s something about the way someone’s voice sounds when he’s reading aloud as if the story existed a little bit more than it would if it were just in your head, and as if we weren’t

Love That Dog is about a kid named Jack. I remember his being the same age as the fourth-grade me and listening to his teacher read aloud to his class like the fourth-grade me. His class is working on a poetry(诗) unit, and he’s not excited about it. They’ve got to keep journals of what the teacher reads, and his first entry says poetry is for girls. I won’t summarize the whole book, but I’ll tell you that Jack’s last entry is different from the first.

I always wondered if he really existed and wanted to find him and talk to him. I didn’t realize that I had already talked to him.

As a fourth grader, Love That Dog stood out to me because it was related. It’s about a young kid with a dog who isn’t really into poetry, like me at the time. As Jack grew into poetry, I felt myself growing with him. It was a shared experience, as if we had been in the same class reading poetry together.

A teacher once said, “Reading is like telepathy(心灵感应).” At the time, I thought he meant that you could understand the writer better by reading his works,, but now I’ve realized it’s a two-way street - the readers can feel understood, too, like the writer knows what his life is like. It’s a conversation. Writers write for the same reason that reasons read for - to feel like they are not alone.

According to new research from the University of Cambridge in England, sheep are able to

recognize human faces from photographs.

The farm animals, who are social and have large brains, were previously known to be able to recognize one another, as well as familiar humans. However, their ability to recognize human 精品文档

faces from photos alone is novel.

The recent study, the results of which were published in the journal Royal Society showed that the woolly creatures could be trained to recognize still images of human faces, including those of former President Barack Obama and actress Emma Watson.

Initially, the sheep were trained to approach certain images by being given food rewards. Later, they were able to recognize the image for which they had been rewarded. The sheep could even recognize images of faces shown at an angle, though their ability to do so declined by about 15 percent – the same rate at which a human’s ability to perform the same task declines.

“Anyone who has spent time working with sheep will know that they are intelligent, individual animals who are able to recognize their handlers,” said Professor Jenny Morton, who led the Cambridge study. “We’ve shown with our study that sheep have advanced face-recognition abilities, comparable with those of humans and monkeys.”

Recognizing faces is one of the most important social skills for human being, and some disorders of the brain, including Huntington’s disease, affect this ability.

“Sheep are long-lived and have brains that are similar in size and complexity to those of some monkeys. That means they can be useful models to help us understand disorders of the brain, such as Huntington’s disease, which develops over a long time and affects cognitive abilities.
