As WWF’s Arctic and Bering Sea program female officer, I connect the dots between polar bears, climate change, and indigenous communities. I lead WWF’s efforts to help polar bears and other Arctic marine mammals coexist alongside people.
When I was in college, I majored in Russian and soaked up everything I could about the country. The
day I graduated, I learned I’d won a chance to study community theater in Irkutsk, a large city in Siberia. There I picked up some environmental knowledge when volunteering with a conservation group and learned loads about Arctic ecosystems and species. Four years later, I moved to Alaska where occasionally WWF’s Alaska office was looking for someone who could speak Russian. They hired me and I’ve been with WWF ever since, coordinating conservation projects between Russian and American research teams.
My ability to move between cultures has proved just as critical to my work at WWF as my technical expertise. The people who live and work in the Arctic represent many incredible backgrounds and opinions—Alaska Native communities, government agencies, activists, people with different nationalities. You can’t do
conservation work here without recognizing the ideological and cultural barriers those differences can create. And if you can recognize them, you have a far better chance of overcoming them.
Thus when I first go into an Alaska Native community, I never start by talking “human-polar bear conflict”. Instead, I ask them what’s happening with polar bears in their village. And I listen. Once I’ve learned the language they use to talk about polar bears, we can work together to find solutions. Although these Alaska Native communities I work with are living in the remotest parts of the state, I rely on them to share those solutions with other Alaska Native communities.

Being bored is no fun, especially at work. There’s nothing worse than finding yourself bored in your office on a Monday morning only to realize there’s still four and a half more days to the weekend. But new research out of the Research School of Management at Australian National University argues that while boredom is certainly boring, it isn’t all bad. This bored mental state can actually spark precious creativity.
The study asked 52 subjects to do a pretty boring job: Sort apart a bowl of red and green beans with just
one hand for 30 minutes. Meanwhile, 49 other subjects—the control group—were instructed to create art projects with paper, beans, and glue.
Once the 30 minutes was over, each group was instructed to spend five minutes on a creative task: they had to come up with reasons why a hypothetical(假设的) person was two hours late for a meeting. What the researchers found was that the bored group came up with not just more ideas than the control group, but more creative ideas than the control group, too. The quality and quantity of production was higher for people who were bored than those who were not.
A similar follow-up study also took measurements of other mental states—namely, frustration and anger. And it found that, despite some previous research that implies boredom can lead to lack of motivation or dissatisfaction at a job, boredom didn’t produce unwanted emotions that could be detrimental to mental health. In this case, people who were bored were just bored, and they walked away with a net benefit of creativity.
“Boredom is not necessarily miserable and harmful based on my research,” says the study’s lead author, Guihyun Park. “People want to get out of a boring state, so they are induced to novelty-seeking unique thinking, which brings out creativity.”
