My father and I were very close. I loved pleasing him, and he was always proud of my success. If I won a spelling contest at school , he was on top of the world. Later in life whenever I got a promotion(提升), I'd call my father right away and he'd rush out to tell all his friends. In 1980, when I was named president of the Ford Motor Company, I didn?t know which of us was more excited.
Like many native Italians, my parents were very open with their feelings and their loves—not only at home but also in public. Most of my friends would never hug their fathers. But I hugged and kissed my dad at every opportunity—nothing could have been more natural.
He was a curious man who was always trying new things. He was the first person in Allentown to buy a motor cycle. Unluckily, my father and his motor cycle didn?t get along too well. He fell off it so often that he got rid of it just a month after buying it. As a result, he never again trusted any vehicle with less than four wheels. Because of that motor cycle, I wasn?t allowed to have a bicycle when I was growing up.

To create better traffic flow in London, money has been collected since February 2003 from people driving in busy areas. It?s a fee that cars pay for entering the city. Every car that comes into the centre of the city has to pay money for using the road. The fee started at£5 in 2003 and has now reached £8. Drivers can pay the charge at any of the 10,000 pay points in the city. Those who don?t pay on time will be fined.
The fee has worked well in the past three years. It took only six months to cut central London traffic by 30%. Many Londoners were not happy with the idea at first. But soon most agreed that it worked well. “Although £8 is not cheap, traffic has become much better. It used to be terrible to drive in London during rush hours.” said Adrian Sandiford, a 25-year-old Londoner. “I hope the government uses the money to improve public transportation. Then many people will choose to take the bus or the subway instead,” Sandiford added.
Big cities around the world deal with traffic jams in different ways. Shanghai tries to stop people buying cars. Those who buy cars have to spend thousands or even tens of thousands of yuan to get a license plate number. In Singapore, not all the cars in the city can use the road on the same day. Cars with odd(奇数的) numbers and those with even (偶数的) numbers use the road on different days. In Washington, D.C. and other US cities, people who carpool (几个人开同一辆车) will save time during rush hours. Carpooling requires more than two people in a car. There are express lanes (快速通道) for carpoolers only. People who drive alone can?t use these lanes.
48. Money is collected from people driving in busy areas in London to _______ .
