Emily and Anne did know, of course. They had known about Charlotte's book for a long time. Jane Eyre was not the first book that Charlotte had sent to a publisher. Over a year ago she had written another book, The Professor, and sent it to one publisher after another. Each publisher had sent it back, in a packet addressed to Currer Bell. And then Charlotte had sent it, in the same old packet, to another publisher, and then another, and got it back again.

“Why didn't you change the paper on the packet, my dear?” I asked.

Charlotte smiled. “I didn't think of it, papa. The worst day was when we were in Manchester, going to the eye doctor. Do you remember? The packet came back then. That was the day before I started writing Jane Eyre.”

“Do you mean that you started writing Jane Eyre while I was lying in the dark room in Manchester?” “That's right, papa.”

“But that's only six months ago, and here is the book in my hand!”

“Yes, papa. The book was printed a month later after I sent it to the publisher.” “My dear! They decided very quickly that they liked it, then!” “I think they did, papa. After all, it is a good book, isn't it?”

She smiled at me. I don't think I have ever seen her so happy. She is a very small person, Charlotte, and not a beautiful woman; but when she smiles like that, her face shines like a fine painting. My wife used to look like that sometimes when I first met her.

I took her hand in mine. “It is a very good book, my dear. I cannot tell you how proud I am.”

She touched my hand. “Thank you, papa. But you must not be proud of me alone. You know, another two of your daughters—Anne and Emily?”

“Oh no, Charlotte, please!” Emily said.

But Charlotte did not stop. “Anne and Emily have written good books too, and their books will soon be published as well! Let me introduce them to you, papa. These young ladies—Anne and Emily, are “not” your daughters—they are separately Acton Bell and Ellis Bell, brothers of the famous writer Currer Bell!”

Emily's face was bright red, but Anne and Charlotte started laughing. I was very surprised. “All three of you!” I said. “But?but why do you use these strange names?”

“Because people are stupid, papa.” Anne said. “No one thinks women can write good books, so we have used men's names. And now they say that Currer Bell is a writer who understands women very well!” She laughed again.

Every boy wants to find treasure. And Tom was no different. One summer day Tom told Huck about his idea. “Where can we look for treasure?” asked Huck.

“It's hidden on islands, under dead trees, but mostly under the floors in haunted(闹鬼的) houses.”

So, one Saturday afternoon Tom and his friend went to look for treasure at the haunted house on Cardiff Hill. It was a quiet and lonely place, which made the boys feel very frightened. They entered quietly, and explored downstairs. There were cobwebs everywhere and everything was old and broken. Then they threw their tools in a corner and walked upstairs, but there was nothing there. They were just about to go downstairs and start digging when Tom stopped.

“What is it?” whispered Huck, going white with fright. “Keep quiet! There's someone downstairs.”

The boys lay down, looking through the holes in the wooden floor. There were two men downstairs. One was an old Spaniard in a wide sombrero hat and the other was dirty and unpleasant-looking.

Tom and Huck shook with fear when they heard the Spaniard speak because they found it was Indian Joe. He said: “It's time for us to move, partner. What will we do with the $650 from the robbery(抢劫)?” “Let's keep $30 each and leave the bag here.”

The dirty man went to the fireplace and moved a stone. Then he lifted out a bag full of money and took out some coins. The two boys forgot all their fears when they saw there was real treasure downstairs.

Then Indian Joe started digging a hole with his knife and the knife hit something. “What is it?” asked the other man. “It's a box,” said Indian Joe. And he put in his hand and pulled out a handful of gold coins. The other man found the boys' tools, and they soon pulled out the box.

“There's thousands of dollars there,” said Indian Joe. “The Murrell Gang used this area one summer,” said his partner.

“They must have hidden their money here.”

“What will we do with this, Joe? Will we bury(埋) it again?” “No, someone might find it,” said Indian Joe.“Let's bury it in the number two den.”

C[2017·镇江改编]

The Diary of a Young Girl was written by a girl named Anne Frank. It is a true experience of a teenager in wartime (World

War II, 1939—1945) and it has also become a symbol of the victory of the human spirit.

Here's one of Anne's diaries.

Friday, 10 September, 1943 Dear Kitty, Every time I write to you something special seems to have happened, but they are more often unpleasant than pleasant things. However, now there is something_wonderful going on. Last Wednesday evening, 8 September, we sat around listening to the seven o'clock news and the first thing we heard was: “Here follows the best news of the whole war. Italy has capitulated(投降)!” Italy's unconditiona surrender(投降)! The Dutch programme (续表)

from England began at quarter past I had just finished writing the chronicle of the day when the wonderful news of Italy's capitulation came in. I can tell you that I have never deposited(放下) my notes in the wastepaper basket with such joy!” “God Save the King,” the American national anthem(国歌), and the “Internationale” were played. As always, the Dutch program was uplifting4, but not too optimistic(乐观的). Still we have troubles, too. It's about Mr. Koophuis. As you know, we are all very fond of him, he is always cheerful and amazingly brave, although he is never well, has a lot of pain, and is not allowed to eat much or do much walking. “When Mr. Koophuis enters, the sun begins to shine,” Mummy said just recently, and she is quite right. Now he has had to go into the hospital for a very unpleasant abdominal operation and will have to stay there for at least four weeks. You really ought to have seen how he said good-bye to us just as usual—he might have simply been going out to do
