Unit 1 Friendship

Period 2 Reading “Anne’s Best Friend” 1. Teaching objectives:

1) To develop the students’ reading ability, learn to use some reading strategies such as skimming, scanning and so on;

2). To get the students to realize the importance of friends and friendship using the target words;

3). To grasp some useful words and expressions in this passage, such as there is a time when…, be crazy about etc.; 2. Teaching procedures: Step 1. Pre-reading T: Hello, boys and girls! Ss: Hello, teacher!

T: We talked about our friends yeserday and everybody needs friends. Q1. Why do you think friends are important to you? S1: We can help each other.

S2: I can tell my secrets to him/her. S3: We can share our happiness and sorrow.

T: So friends are really valuable parts in our life.

Q2. What do you think a good friend should be like? List the good qualities a good friend should have .

Ss: honest, loyal, helpful, reliable, sincere, friendly…

T: We are talking about persons as our good friends. Does a friend always have to be a person? Ss: Yes/No.

T: What else can be your friends?

Ss: dogs, cats, pigs, books, computers, music… Step 2. Listening

T: Good answers! Do you think a diary can become your friend? There is a girl called Anne who considered her diary as her best friend. Let’s listen to the tape to know why and complete the passage on p41. T checks the answers after listening. Step 3. Fast-Reading

T: Do you keep a diary? What do you think most people set down in their diaries? S1: Yes, I keep a diary. I write some feelings in my diary. S2: No. I guess people record something happened in their lives. S3: Yes. I would write my secrets in the diary. …

T: Just as you do, I also keep a diary and I always write my deepest feelings and thoughts. Sometimes I also set down a series of facts in my diary. Now let’s get more information about Anne. Turn to page 2 and read the first two paragraphs quickly to fill in the form below. T: Maybe you haven’t had the same experience as hers, but was there a time when you were forced to stay indoors for a long time?

Ss: I was forced to be indoors because I had to have lessons in holidays, I was very sad and angry.

T: Good. You can say it like this: There was a time when I was forced to be indoors because I had to have lessons. Try to use the expression like this. Ss: There was a time when I was ill in hospital, I had to stay in bed all day long and I wanted to go outdoors to get close to nature.

Ss: I’ve grown crazy about Jay/super girls/NBA stars/computer games. T: Twenty-five months is really a long time for someone who had to hide. Do you think so?
