I?m sorry I couldn?t write earlier. You know I was too busy trying to settle down, getting to know my new family, and fitting in at school. Well, it seems I?ve been doing a bad job. I don?t know: is it me or is it the people around me? I think John and Mariana don?t like me much though they?re always nice to me. It seems I keep on doing things they don?t approve of… they?re just like my parents, but they should not be; they?re American, right? They?re supposed to be free and not to mind where I go or when I return ?home?. Instead, John waits up for me every night and Mariana always lectures me about respecting their rules and regulations. Their last order was that I am not allowed to go out on weekdays… can you believe this?
Even Mr. Scatterbrained gives me lectures on acceptable behavior…. wait a minute, I have to open the door… it seems Mariana is in one of her lecturing moods…
OMG! I am so confused. Mariana told me Mrs. Brooks just called to inform her that my behavior at school was not satisfactory. It seems they want me to study more and be less ?wild? or so Mariana put it. Wild? Me? And Mrs. Brooks? When I agreed to my parents? idea, I thought it would be a chance to throw ?everything? to the wind and be free, and the US was the perfect place. I thought families in the US were so different from ours: they?re mostly broken and parents work so hard all day so they are so tired and do not really care about what their children do. When I told Mariana this, she laughed and hugged me saying all parents on earth care about their children whether they?re too busy or not, American or not. She also asked me to take a look around me: how many of my classmates go out every day? Have I ever seen anyone going out without their parents? permission?
I then had the guts to ask Mariana how come Mrs. Brooks thinks my behavior is unacceptable. Mariana was surprised and said she did not understand what I meant. I said people like Mrs. Brooks were supposed to be the bad ones, and that almost all criminals were like her. Mariana insisted this is just a misconception which I?ve learned from the media and all those movies which are destroying my brain (Mariana?s words). She then asked me to find an answer to this question: where does it say that our skin color dictates our behavior or determines whether we?re good or bad?
Know something? Mariana is right… I have had this mistaken idea about Americans being ?free? to the extent that I had forgotten all parents must be the same. Would my parents at home be proud of me if they saw me now? Am I truly proud of myself? No! I have also thought some Americans were evil. I must think before I exercise judgment, and as of today, I will change my attitude and be the girl my parents have brought me up to be.
