1. value

n. 价值 be of great value = be very valuable 非常有价值 vt. (1). 给…估价;给…评价

I valued the bike at 200 dollars. 我估计这辆自行车值200美元。

That was the way bourgeois society valued a man. 这就是资产阶级社会评价人的方法。 (2). 重视, 珍视 value him as a friend 把他视为朋友

I valued my friendship with my classmates. 我珍视我和同学们之间的友谊。

2.in need需要帮助的;穷困的 children in need 需要帮助的/穷困的孩子们 in need of需要(某物)

He was in desperate need of medical care. 他迫切需要医疗护理。

A friend in need is a friend indeed. 患难见真情;患难之交才是真朋友。

There is no need for sb to do sth. 某人没必要做某事。

There is no need for you to get up early tomorrow. 你明天不必早起。 meet / satisfy one’s needs 满足某人的需要

3. affair

(1). (私人的、个别的)事情

My father is always trying not to interfere in my affairs. 我父亲总是尽量不干涉我的事情。

(2). 复数形式affairs常指“外交、经济等方面的重大事件、事情”,其前不加定冠词。

He is absorbed in international affairs. 他关心国际事务。

foreign affairs 外交事务; political affairs政治事务; settle affairs解决事务

4. acquire (通过努力)获得, 得到, 学得(知识、技术),养成(习惯、行为、嗜好) acquire a good knowledge of English 精通英语

acquire a habit of smoking 养成抽烟的习惯 acquire land 获得土地

I tried to acquire the information I needed. 我千方百计地搞到了我所需要的资料。 His character acquired him a good name / reputation. 他的品格使他得到好名声。

5. sort

n. 种类; 类别 -- What sort of sports do you like best? 你最喜欢哪一种运动? -- I like all sorts of sports 我喜欢各种各样的运动。

这种动物非常罕见。 ① This sort of animal is very rare.

② Animals of this sort are very rare.

sort of 稍微,有点儿 I felt sort of embarrassed. 我感到有点尴尬。 v. 将……分类,整理 sort the old cards 将旧卡片加以分类/ 整理 sort out (1) 加以分类, 整理, 拣选 (2)(口语中)解决(问题等)

6. sceptical (英)表示怀疑的,持怀疑态度的 = (美) skeptical

be sceptical about / of sth 对…表示怀疑的 take a skeptical attitude 持怀疑的态度

7. frequent adj. 经常地,频繁的,惯常的 frequently adv. ① He is a frequent visitor to that country. 他经常去那个国家。 ② He makes frequent visits to that country.

8. advance

v. (1) 使)前进, (使)发展; 促进

advance the development of Chinese medicine 促进中药的发展 I signed to him to keep away, but he continued to advance. 我示意他离开, 但他还是继续往前走。 She advanced greatly in her knowledge. 她在学识上大有长进。 (2) 提前 They advanced the date of the meeting. 他们把会议的日期提前了。 (3) 增加;增长;增进;提高(价格、费用等) Prices are advancing. 物价都在上涨。

9. common

adj. (1) 普遍的, 常见的 a common mistake 一个常见的错误

This sort of weather is quite common. 这种天气很常见。 (2) 公有的, 共有的, 共同的 English is often used as the common language at international conferences. 在国际会议上,常使用英语为共同语言。

Certain desires are common to all people. 某些欲望对所有的人是共有的。 搭配:common sense 常识

in common共同 in common with… 与??有共同之处

In common with many other boys, he likes football. 和很多其他男孩一样,他喜欢足球。 have sth in common with sb

We had a lot / nothing in common with each other. 我们彼此有很多/没有任何共同之处。

10. address

n. (1) 住址,收件人地址 Be sure to put down the address of the receiver clearly. (2) 致辞,演说,演讲 an opening address / a closing address 开幕 / 闭幕致辞 She gave an address of welcome. 她致了欢迎辞。 v. (1) (在信封上)写收件人的姓名与地址 ~ sth to sb / sth The letter was correctly addressed, but delivered to the wrong house.

11. advantage n. 有利条件,有利因素,优点,优势

Being tall gave him an advantage over the other players. 他个子高,比其他运动员有利。 She got the job because she had the advantage (over others) of knowing many languages. 因为她有(别人所无的)懂多种语言的优势,所以获得了这份工作。

take advantage of …… 利用

我希望这座图书馆能被充分利用。 ① I hope that this library is fully taken advantage of.

to one’s advantage = to the advantage of sb 对某人有利的

12. occur vi. occur--occurred--occurred occurring (1) occur通常指“意想不到的事的发生,且较正式”,可与happen通用;take place多指“按计划或意图进行的,而不是偶然出现的”;come about强调“发生,产生”。 The traffic accident occurred at midnight. 车祸在午夜发生。 (2)sth occur to sb. 某人突然想起(想到)……

An idea has occurred to me. 我忽然有了主意。

我突然想要到欧洲旅游。 ① It occurred to me to travel Europe.

13.addicted adj. 上瘾的,沉溺的,入迷的 be addicted to …… 对……上瘾的,入迷的

14. course

15. handle

n. 手柄, 把手 the handle of a door / knife 门把手 / 刀柄

v. (1) 用手触摸 Handle the box with care. 小心轻放盒子。 (2) 对待(人、动物),应付;处理(问题等);办理;经营,经销(商品) A clerk must know how to handle difficult customers.

17. accustomed adj. 习惯的
