1.确定基金管理的投资目标。不同的基金投资目标对应不同的风险和收益状况，高收益目标需要承担较高的市场风险。基金的投资目标大致分为三类，第一类是追求长期的资本增值，即成长型基金目标；第二类是追求当期收入和绝对分红收益，即价值型基金目标；第三类是兼顾长期资本增值和当期收入，即平衡型基金目标。
2．确定证券组合类型。基金经理按照所公布的基金契约的要求进行基金投资于管理，如将较大的资金比例投入某些看好行业、或某些类型的上市公司等，使整个证券组合具有某种明显的行业特征和风险收益特征。
3.确定证券投资分散化的程度。基金投资分散化的程度由该基金所持证券的种类数和基金总值中不同类型证券的比重决定，不同基金有着不同的分散投资政策，基金投资的分散程度越强，基金投资组合的整体风险越小，个股异常波动对基金收益的影响也越小。
4.确定股票、国债、现金的组合比例。基金经理根据对股票市场、国债市场价格趋势的研究判断，经常在股票、国债和货币市场之间进行资本转移，不断调整各自仓位的大小以应对未来变化的不确定性。5.正确选择未来经营看好的上市公司进行投资。基金经理很重要
