给水工程设计是给水排水工程专业为配合《水质工程I》课程的学习而设置的一个必修环节。通过本次设计，巩固学生的学习成果，加深对《水质工程I》内容的学习与理解，使学生学会应用规范、手册与文献资料，进一步了解设计原则、方法及步骤，掌握自来水厂设计的方法。在教师指导下，基本能独立完成一个中、小型自来水厂工艺设计。
三、设计的基本环节及主要内容
1. 设计基本知识介绍：设计原则、方法、步骤介绍；设计任务及要求；设计中具体问题介绍；平面布置及高程计算。
2. 方案比选：通过方案比较，确定自来水厂处理工艺系统。 3. 处理构筑物设计计算：包括混合、絮凝池、沉淀池（澄清池）、滤池、清水池、吸水井等生产构筑物，以及加药间、加氯间、二泵房等生产建筑物的设计计算，确定各构筑物和建筑物的形式、个数及尺寸；机械设备确定型号、台数。
4. 混凝沉淀（澄清）、过滤主要构筑物：施工及大样图绘制（任选一种构筑物） 5. 自来水厂平面布置：平面布置、平面图绘制（比例为1：200~1：500）。 6. 自来水厂高程布置：高程计算、高程图绘制（纵向比例为1：100~1:200）。 7. 设计文本编制 ：设计说明书、设计计算书编制。
四、设计的基本要求及能力训练
课程设计开始之前，必须认真阅读课程设计任务书，复习教材有关部分章节以及熟悉所用规范、手册、标准图等有关文献资料。所做设计应力求设计原则与方案选定能够贯彻国家的有关方针政策；论证正确合理、设计计算正确；熟练掌握CAD绘图工具、做到计算机绘图及手绘图图面整洁；说明书简明扼要、文理通顺；保证在规定的时间内质量良好的完成所规定的设计任务。
在教师指导下，学生对自来水厂的主体构筑物、辅助设施、计量设备及水厂总体规划、管道系统做到一般的技术设计深度，并绘制规范的施工及大样图，培养和提高学生的计算能力、设计和绘图水平；同时锻炼和提高学生独立工作能力以及分析和解决工程问题的能力。
五、考核方式与成绩评定
本课程采取的考核方式：审核学生所完成的课程设计成果，含课程设计说明书和计算书一份及设计图纸2张（2号图纸）。根据其设计成果的质量，采用“优、良、中、及格、不及格”5级评分方法。
