“Redshirting” is a term that comes from the world of college sports, describing athletes who are kept off the field until they develop certain skills. They often sit out a year or more. Many parents with children ready to start school have adopted(接受) the same line of thinking. They are waiting until their children are 6 years old before sending them to kindergarten.

Nationally, there has been a jump in the percentage of kids that were held back.Only 9 percent of children were being redshirted back in the mid-1990s.By 2014,16.4 percent of children entering kindergarten were 6 or older, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. The jump likely has to do with schools' increasing emphasis on academic achievement and parents' growing attention to their kids' emotional needs.

Lisa DeLuna wonders whether her son,Jacob, might have benefited from being held back.He started kindergarten only weeks after turning 5,and he struggled to keep up socially and academically.“He seemed ready for kindergarten at the time, but it wasn't until 3rd grade that things really began to get better for him,” she says.

On the contrary,Anna Sandler has few worries about daughter Molly, who is also a 3rd grader and the youngest in her class.Molly also has a sister who just started kindergarten and she, too,is the youngest in her class.“I didn't hold either of my girls back. They both have good language skills and are actually quite tall for their ages.

When Molly was in 2nd grade, her handwriting was worse than others'.Now,a year later, her handwriting shows no difference,”Sandler says.

The above children's experiences agree neatly with data collected by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).“Our research shows that even if there is a benefit from redshirting to a child in the first year or years,by 3rd grade any differences between children held back and those not are very slight,” says Kyle Snow, director of the Center for Applied Research at the NAEYC.
