It was an unusually quiet day in the emergency room (急救室)on December twenty-fifth. Quiet, that is, except for the nurses’ 36 about working on Christmas Day. 37 there were no patients waiting to be seen, I was just about to go out. But then came the 38 : a pale woman and four children in old clothing. “Are you all sick?” I asked 39 . “Yes,” she said weakly, and 40 her head. After some questions I knew she was 41 . Our hospital policy, however, was not to turn away any patient,

I checked the form finished by the woman and found no address—they were 44 . I told the other nurses about it. The nurses went into action at once, much as we do when there’s a medical emergency.

A
For 52 years my father got up at 5:30 am every morning, went to work, and returned home at 5:30 pm. I never
saw my father stayed home from work ill, nor did I ever see my father lay down to take a nap. He had no hobbies, other than taking care of his family. All he asked from me, his daughter, was to help him while he was repairing something, so we could have some time to talk.
For 22 years, after I left home for college, my father called me at 9:00 am every Sunday. Nine years ago when I bought my first house, my father, 67 years old, spent eight hours a day for three days in the 80-degree Kansas heat, painting my house. He would not allow me to pay someone to have it done. All he asked for was a glass of iced tea. Five years ago, at age 71, my father spent five hours putting together a swing set for my daughter. Four years ago, my father drove all the way from Denver to Topeka, with an eight-foot Colorado Blue Spruce (云杉) in his truck, so that we could have a part of Colorado growing on our land.
On the morning of January 16, 1996, my sister telephoned me; my father was in the hospital with an aneurysm(动脉瘤) in Florida. I got on an airplane immediately, and on the way I realized that I hadn’t communicated with him as much as I’d always wanted to. I vowed(发誓) that when I arrived, I would have a long talk with him. I arrived in Florida at 1 am, only to find that my father, at the age of 76, had passed away at 9:12 pm. This time it was he who did not have time to talk, or time to wait for me.

58. According to the last paragraph, we can know that the author’s father was born in ______.
A. 1916 B. 1918 C. 1920 D. 1922 59. The author wrote the article in order to ______.
A. praise her father B. remember her father C. show her father loved her D. let her father be known

In the UK, most children have their midday meal at school, but in many schools, parents can choose what their children eat. The children can have a school lunch—a hot, cooked meal; or they can take a packed lunch with them, which usually includes cold food like sandwiches.
Often parents prepare lunches on the basis of what their children want. Cathy, a mother of three children, told us, “My children have packed lunches, because they say they hate school dinners. I make 3 packed lunches every morning, so we’re like a sandwich bar in our kitchen in the morning.”
7
However, another mother, Susan, made her choice based on the nutritious value of the food. She said, “My daughter always has school dinners. I think she probably gets healthier food by having a cooked lunch at school than she would if I made sandwiches.”
But how healthy are school dinners? Kaz, a father, wasn’t impressed with them. “Fizzy (有泡沫的) drinks were offered and I think there were a lot of chips.”
The question of how healthy school food is was brought to Jamie Oliver, who launched a campaign to improve children’s nutrition, after spending a year working in a school kitchen. The TV series about the campaign won an award this week.
He was horrified (惊恐的) at the junk food he saw being served, which included burgers, pizza and chips. He decided to ban the junk, and started cooking good stews (炖菜) and curries for the children instead.
Jamie improved the school dinners in that particular school, and trained the dinner ladies to cook healthy food. Then he put pressure on the government to improve the standards of school food across the country. And it looks as if the changes have begun.
60. What would be the best title for the passage?

An official record showed that about 34 percent of children in the US are overweight. Talking to children about nutrition is especially important because of rising obesity rates among American children, said Emma Davis-Kovacs, an expert working on the study of food and nutrition. But it’s not clear that education for teens is successful, experts say.
The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey has been trying practical(有实际经验的) nutrition workshops at its summer program for high school students in the Newark area. “There was some resistance(抵抗),”said Clinton Dozier, director of the pre-college program at the School of Health Related Professions. “They needed information about how they could enjoy nutritionally balanced meals.”
They might have needed the information, but it didn’t seem to make the vegetables taste any better. “I don’t like vegetables,” said Imani Clark, 14, pointing at a plate of greens as the smell of onions drifted into the classroom from the kitchen. Imani said she eats carrots, but only with cheese.
Dozier, an expert of the New Jersey University’s program, said, “We can talk to young folks, and we can clearly explain it to them. But if we can persuade them ... hopefully that will be long-lasting for them.” Colleen Johnson, a dietitian of the program, said, “it’s always very difficult to get the kids to eat a balanced, healthy meal. But many of the same kids will be back next summer, so maybe some of the lessons will be fully understood.”
64. According to the passage, the purpose of the summer program in the Newark area is to ______.
A. tell the children how to lose weight
B. teach the children how to make the vegetables taste better C. communicate with the children about cooking
D. give the children some information about healthy eating

Cooking lessons are back on the menu in schools because a generation (代) of parents don’t know how to cook. Children are to be taught how to cook healthy dishes in hands-on lessons in school in the UK. The new plan is being supported by many famous people, including celebrity (名人) cook Galton Blackiston.
He said, “It is a wonderful idea that cooking should be a basic skill learned by everyone, particularly students. One of the biggest problems I find is that there are many parents who weren’t taught the basic skills. There seems to have been a generation gap, so to have an action like this seems great.”
Pupils aged between 11 and 16 will be awarded a “license to cook” when they have mastered basic skills like baking cakes or making ordinary dishes. Right now, students can only learn cooking skills as part of Design and Technology lessons, but the lessons are mostly theory- based.
Food such as fatty meat, cakes and plates of fried chips are off the school dinner menu. Chocolate, crisps and soft drinks are banned(禁止), and so is fast food. Nutrition guides banning meals high in salt and fat have been introduced by cook Jamie Oliver. Schoolchildren are encouraged to eat more fruit and vegetables with every meal. 67. Cooking lessons are to be taught in the UK because ______.
A. British people like eating nice dishes B. many parents don’t know how to cook C. many famous people support the action D. British pupils want to learn how to cook 68. What does Galton Blackiston think of cooking?

A. he will be praised by his teachers and parents B. he will be awarded a “license to cook”
C. it will be easy for him to succeed in high school D. he will find a job easily when he grows up 70. In the last paragraph, the author mainly tells readers ______
A. unhealthy food harms children B. fruit and vegetables are delicious
C. what cook Jamie Oliver said on TV D. what kind of food students should eat

Don’t eat your lettuce! Last fall, US health officials warned people not to buy fresh lettuce that is sold in bags, after a kind of bacteria (细菌) called E. coli made people in at least twenty-one states sick.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) believed that the bacteria was spread when people ate bagged fresh lettuce. But officials were not able to find out exactly where the lettuce was coming from or which brand it was. “We’re advising people not to eat it,” said Dr. David Acheson of the FDA.
E. coli leads to diarrhea(腹泻), vomiting and cramps. Usually people get better in five to ten days. In some people, especially very young children and the elderly, the bacteria can also cause big problems. According to health officials, one person in Wisconsin died from the infection(感染).
E. coli is usually found in the intestines(肠) of healthy cows. The bacteria causes 73,000 infections in the US each year.
To avoid infection, it is important to cook food, especially hamburgers, well. Drink only pasteurized(杀菌的) milk and juice. Hand washing after bathroom visits is important as well.
An FDA official warned that simply washing the lettuce wouldn’t work. “Even if you wash it, it is not going to get rid of the bacteria,” says Robert Brackett.
